A Visit to Mindrolling Monastery Dehra Dun India

May 11,2008

Is it Mind-Rolling or Min-Drolling? Both are appropriate.

Had to go to Dehra Dun for some business things and took a little break at the big Tibetan Buddhist Temple and Monastery there in the Clement Town district. Here are some photos of the temple, monastery building, garden, flowers and stupas. There are also shops, restaurants and a book shop, the latter though is rarely open and doesn’t maintain a large stock of English books. Most of the books are in Tibetan language and are most likely meant for purchase by the large Tibetan community that surrounds the temple.

To reach the temple from clock tower go down Delhi highway road past the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal) until you reach signs for Clement Town. There are a few signs within Clement Town directing one to the temple but as you approach the top of the spire can be seen from some distance as can the large Buddha statue.

The interior of the temple is only open to the public on Sundays and one can climb the stairs though the many levels with their ornate decorations to reach the viewing platform. Shoes must be removed before entering the temple and there is a shoe check just outside available for a nominal fee. But other days the garden and shops are open.

It is possible to stay at this complex as a guest. Inquiries can be made at the monastery’s website or at the monastery itself.

    • I would like to join the retreat with Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche. I am currently in Rishikesh.
Visiting the Stupa two days ago I met Khandro.

Looking forward to hear from you.
