Religion and Film Course

Here’s a useful way to spend some Internet time.

The inimitable Rev. Danny Fisher has constructed a course that examines the interactions between religion and film. And he’s done it on Twitter.  Follow the hashtag #religionfilmminicourse for complete details.

For those not on Twitter here are the contents thus far in chronological order. There’s even a section with advanced topics. Just read or listen to the linked material and watch the attached related YouTube video for each section. I don’t know if there will be an exam or not.

  1. Thank you — I will have to take the course.
I just watch “Bicentennial Man” with Robin Williams. Loved it — but then I am a bit of a sap. And it stirred many fruitful conversations with my kids (8 and 10 years-old). It made me think about religion and film.

In the film was this joke:

Question: What did the Buddhist monk say to the hot dog vendor?
Answer: “Make me one with everything”

This popular view of Buddhism, I think, is embraced by many modern Buddhists and is a mistaken sort of monism. But it is a common popular perception unfortunately. Films are indeed the main diet of the religious minds of most people while churches and temples loose their audiences. Critical viewing is often not a habit of film watchers, instead they are there to imbibe.

I hope this course offers me a bit more help with my sobriety! Smile.
